On Sunday 1 October 2017 from 1-5pm, the University of Otago’s Christchurch campus at 2 Riccarton Ave, on the Christchurch Hospital site will be open to the public to see inside laboratories and learn about research on genetics, cancer, infectious diseases and 3D-bioprinting. You can visit their Simulation Centre where medical students and other health professionals practice skills, such as taking blood or suturing, before using them in real-life medical situations. The Centre is home to high-tech mannequins that can simulate conditions such as heart failure or trauma for students and other health professionals to respond to. Researchers will be available to chat with you and show off some of their work at interactive displays. As part of the NZIA Architecture Week 2016, Warren and Mahoney Architects (254 Montreal St) will be hosting an open studio day between 1pm and 2pm this Saturday the 9th of September. They will be displaying some of their current work around the city, including examples of the design process in action, and the technologies they use – including 3D printing and Virtual Reality headsets. This is a great opportunity to visit a professional office and get a ‘behind the scenes’ experience of the creative industry. You are welcome to take your friends and family with you.
There will also be some architectural graduates on hand to answer any questions students might have about studying and working in architecture, architectural technologies or interior design.
MAINZ is the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand, a Tertiary Institute based in Christchurch specialising in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Live Sound and DJing. SIT (Southern Institute of Technology) have a campus in Christchurch and offer courses in automotive, collision repair, construction, electrical engineering, group fitness, hairdressing, mental health support work, personal training, project management, refrigeration and air conditioning. To find out more about any of these courses go along to their Open Evening on Tuesday 17 October, at 60 Waterloo Rd, from 5pm – 7pm, and talk to their team about 2018 courses. SIT offer zero fees for most courses where you only pay for direct material costs. Parents are welcome to go along with you.
